Method Acting and the first Sense Memory exercise

This is part four of the basics of Method Acting. The Breakfast Drink is the first Sense Memory exercise.

The Breakfast Drink
The purpose of this exercise is to experience and fix in memory the reliving of all the sensory aspects of the breakfast drink. Choose what you habitually drink in the morning (e.g. a cold fruit juice or a hot drink like tea or coffee). Take the cup or glass in both hands and concentrate on your five senses one at a time. Breathe in the smell. Concentrate on the aroma. Allow yourself to feel the heat, steam or cold of the cup. Explore the cup with your hands. Note the weight and texture of it. Be aware of the patterns or decorations on the cup. Note any cracks, nicks or flaws. Listen to the liquid as you stir it or swirl it. See the color, size and shape of the cup. Taste the liquid. Be aware of the temperature, texture and flavor. Also pay attention to the cup against you mouth. 

This whole procedure should be done slowly. Deeply explore all of the sensations. The more time to devote to exploration, the more beneficial the exercise becomes. The idea is to be entirely focused and completely concentrated on the breakfast drink.

Now set the container down, turn away and repeat the entire procedure without the breakfast drink.

If you find that you are not able to recreate some of the sensations experienced with the actual cup or glass in your hand, go back to the physical object itself and explore it again. Concentrate on weak sensory aspects as you work with the container (for example, if you cannot re-live the odor, return to the drink and focus on the odor in particular). By thus alternating between the actual drink and imaginarily re-experiencing the drink, weak sensory aspects may be strengthened.

The goal of this exercise is to improve concentration, but specifically this is an attempt to determine how many of your senses are working.

The "breakfast drink" refers to coffee. Coffee has a distinct smell. As you have learned, smell is an important trigger for memory recall. Using a cup of coffee as the breakfast drink will make the exercise easier. However, the exercise is called the breakfast drink so that any cup and liquid may be used.

The goal of the exercise is to become familiar with the object, and be able to draw on the memory. As a Method Actor, you want to be able to experience the breakfast drink and recall the sights, smells and sense of touch at will. When you have mastered the breakfast drink you will be ready to move on to other objects. The final outcome will be the ability to recall objects from memory, experience the sensory input from those objects, and have a genuine emotional response to those sensory stimulations. You as the actor will then have a library of object in memory you can use to create true reactions.

Weslo bikes range from around $130 to $300, so you'll not be paying much for one of its machines. There are many who'd argue that buying a machine for under $300 is a complete waste of money. The argument goes that when you make something too cheaply you end up with something that simply does not provide any kind of a workout. To some extent they have a point, but many can't afford anything more expensive or can't justify paying more than a few hundred dollars on a piece of exercise equipment. And, Weslo exercise bikes aren't that bad - well, at least some of them aren't that bad.

The cheapest upright is the Weslo Pursuit 2.0 DS bike - model WLEX0901 - that retails for less than a hundred dollars. It comes with cross-training arms to help work the upper body during a workout; this is somewhat like the Schwinn AirDyne bike except that it's one-tenth the price. So, what does 80 bucks get you? Well, you get a very, very small console that tracks your speed, time, distance, calories burned and tests your eyesight. The resistance can be manually changed and the arms can be used in and out of conjunction with the pedals.

The seat is a little on the small side and can be become uncomfortable after a little while. The pedals too are little plasticky pedals. In truth, the Pursuit 2.0 DS is just too cheaply built to of any real use in getting you seriously fit; if you're even a little bit serious about doing exercise you should spend a little bit more and look at something else.

The Pursuit 4.0 (WLEX1776) costs twice that of the WLEX0901 and is a conventional upright - there aren't any cross-training arms, thankfully. What can I say that's positive about it? Well, the fly-wheel comes in a casing that's painted a nice shade of green. I'm being a little harsh; you actually do get some decent features with this bike. It comes with a largish console that is easy to read. There's an Easy Pulse heart rate monitor incorporated into the handle bars, a target pacer and you get 4 preset programs. The seat and pedals are also a lot better than the Pursuit 2.0. I would only recommend this machine if you'd never used one before and wanted to buy a bike for occasional use and were planning on only doing very gentle workouts.

The top-of-the-line model is the Pursuit E 40 (WLEX1994). If you do buy a Weslo upright exercise bike this should be the model you choose. It certainly has the best build quality, the best console and the best features of the lot. There are 8 preset programs, EKG grip pulse sensor and even a water bottle holder. This machine would be fine for someone who's never cycled before and wanted a cheap machine as their first time purchase, and wanted to start working out.

You can also buy a Weslo recumbent exercise bike. The cheapest model is the Pursuit E21 recumbent (WLEX1402) retailing at around $130. I'm not even going to waste either my time or yours in telling you why should not buy this machine.

The Pursuit 6.0 DX (WLEX1304) is also a complete waste of time; I can't make up my mind which is the worst of the two, the Pursuit E21 or 6.0 DX - a tough call.

If you must by a recumbent model then buy either the Weslo Pursuit E 45 or the Pursuit 4.5 R bike. Both cost around $180. The 6.0 DX comes with decent sized LCD display, EKG grip heart rate monitor and 4 pacer programs. The 4.5 R comes with 6 personal trainer workout programs and an Easy Pulse heart rate monitor. Of the two machines I prefer the 4.5 R, it looks better and I prefer the overall styling as well as the 6 personal trainer programs.

A Weslo exercise bike is a cheap bike; there's no denying, and I feel that these bikes would only be of any use to entry-level, infrequent users; and even then, only some of the bikes would fit for purpose.

Start by laying on the floor on your stomach. Extend your arms straight out in front of you with your palms facing downward. Raise your right arm in unison with your left leg and try to raise it as high as you can. Hold this for about 5 seconds then switch to the opposite arm and leg and repeat. Do this for 1 minute. Try to get 3 reps in.

Pelvic shift - Start by laying on your back with your palms face down by your hips. Bend your knees to get them as close to your butt as you can. Thrust upwards and try and hold that position for 20 seconds. This may seem hard at first but try and work your up to 30 seconds. Do this for 3 reps as well.

These are just a couple simple exercises that will help you grow taller if you do them consistently. Try doing these exercises everyday if you can fit them into your schedule.

Does Homeopathic HCG Really Work for Weight Loss?

Most of the public information on HCG is merely duplicated from a few superficial sources. Almost nothing original or new is available on the most important basic facts about this hormone. It is nearly impossible for the non-scientist to find out anything about the real science behind it. This is even truer for homeopathic HCG. Unfortunately, medical professionals who have no scientific background are writing about it, and too many non-medical people are thoughtlessly repeating what the doctors are saying.



The first thing to know about HCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) is that this hormone is a very complicated protein molecule. This just means that no synthetic versions are available. Nevertheless, two kinds of HCG products that are on the market right now do not contain the complete native hormone. One of these is homeopathic HCG and the other is genetically engineered HCG. This article addresses the first of these. Genetically engineered HCG is the subject of a separate article.



WHAT IS HOMEOPATHIC MEDICINE?



You must first understand what homeopathy is before you can evaluate what I have to say about homeopathic HCG. This approach to medicine has two fundamental differences from naturopathic or allopathic medicine. Standard thinking in these latter two treatment modalities are what I call 'dose-dependent' - in other words, the medicinal activity of a substance depends on its dosage. For example, when you take a higher dose of aspirin, you will increase its affect on your body. What you take a sufficient dose of it, aspirin will counteract the symptoms that you want to suppress.



In contrast, homeopathic medicine adheres to something called the 'Law of Similars', or 'like cures like'. This means that a symptom is curable by a substance that causes that symptom. Since aspirin does not cause fever, it is not homeopathic.



Homeopathic medicines also become more powerful when they are diluted. By diluting a solution that contains a homeopathic substance (i.e., decreasing its concentration), the strength of the medicine becomes greater. Successive 10-fold or 100-fold dilutions make the medicine stronger and stronger. Indeed, the most powerful homeopathic drugs are so dilute that there is almost no statistical chance for any of the starter substance to remain in solution.



By the way, homeopathic medicine is very effective, and plenty of scientific research backs this up. Nobody knows, however, how a solution of homeopathic water that contains none of the original substance still works. Although the principles of homeopathy do not fit into 'normal' scientific explanations, the experimental results of this modality support its effectiveness.



Homeopathic HCG fits neither of the basic principles of homeopathic medicine. HCG does not cause people to get fat, so it does not satisfy the Law of Similars. Serial dilutions of hormones in general lead to loss of effectiveness. This raises the question about how effective can homeopathic HCG be? This is where we have to look at results.



ABSENCE OF SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH ON HOMEOPATHIC HCG



My favorite source of information on medical research is the PubMed database at the U.S. National Institutes of Health, which offers titles and abstracts from thousands of scientific journals. As of July 2009, a search for articles involving 'human chorionic gonadotropin' found 519 research articles on this topic. A co-search of this term with 'homeopathy' or 'homeopathic' yielded no articles at all.



This does not mean that no research has been done or is being done on homeopathic HCG. It just means that there are no studies that have been published for public examination. This is in spite of the fact that a handful of scientific journals are dedicated to homeopathic medicine. No homeopathic researcher has published a study on HCG.



VALUE OF TESTIMONIALS



The only accessible evidence for the effectiveness of homeopathic HCG is through the hundreds or thousands of testimonials by people who have used it, by physicians who have prescribed it, or by marketing sites that tout it as the best thing since sliced bread. These are impossible to evaluate scientifically.



The definitive information that you must have on homeopathic HCG is whether it directs your body to burn fat. That is what HCG does, and that is the foundation for the discovery by Dr. A.T.W. Simeons more than 60 years ago. If you begin a program of 500 calories per day, supplementing with homeopathic HCG, you will certainly lose weight. The critical measure, however, is whether your percent body fat drops.



THE ONLY EVIDENCE THAT YOU MUST HAVE



Testimonials do not suffice as scientific evidence for anything. The only way for you to know whether homeopathic HCG works for you is for you to use it while keeping track of your percent body fat. When you lose weight without losing body fat, then all you are doing is starving yourself on 500 calories per day. Everyone will lose weight this way. When you lose weight AND body fat percentage, then you know that the homeopathic preparation is working to make your body burn fat.



The bottom line is that there is no solid scientific evidence for the effectiveness of homeopathic HCG. Keep in mind that absence of evidence does not mean that it doesn't work. It is simply an absence of evidence. Your option is to wait for a study to be completed, which may not happen for years, or experiment with it yourself to find out whether it works for you. However, the pitfalls of experimenting on yourself outweigh the certainty of using a well-established weight loss program using non-homeopathic HCG. That is my recommendation, at least until I see some solid scientific evidence in support of homeopathic HCG.
